GCUPI-B New masterplan for the historic center of Benghazi

DRA&U took part in the GCUPI-B – Global Competitive Urban Planning Initiative of Benghazi, promoted by the Fund for Development and Reconstruction of Libya (FDRL), presenting a Masterplan proposal for the Historic Centre of Benghazi. The proposal was developed by a multidisciplinary group of firms coordinated by DRA&U and ENGLOBE, in partnership with BuroMilan, Studio Speri and European Engineering.

During the event, Francesco Squasi, Partner at DRA&U, together with Francesca Indio of ENGLOBE, presented to the audience, chaired by Eng. Belkasem Haftar, the design vision for the regeneration of the city’s historic centre.

The Masterplan is based on a careful reading of Benghazi’s historical and urban heritage and identifies the city’s ability to evolve while preserving its identity as a key priority. The proposal enhances the historical layering of the urban fabric, from the Ottoman period to the Italian era, while integrating and respecting the traditions of Libyan architecture.

These elements form the basis of an urban regeneration strategy aimed at restoring centrality, quality and continuity to the historic heart of Benghazi, while supporting its ongoing process of transformation and contemporary development.
